Qawwali music was born in the Indian subcontinent in the 13th century following the Islamic invasions. It draws its roots from the same origin that led to the Khayal Gharana of Hindustani classical music. The origin of Qawwali can be traced from the four Tarriqas of Sufi musical heritage that came to India.
Qawaali emerged in what is now India and Pakistan in the 13th century, in close association with the Sufi and their Islamic mysticism. Typically, there are a lot of people involved in a performance, with eight or nine players making music with harmoniums, tabla, dholak and other percussive instruments.
The roots of qawwali can be traced back to the 13th century, during the reign of Amir Khusrau Dehlavi, a renowned Sufi poet, musician, and scholar. Khusrau is often credited as the founding figure of qawwali, as he introduced innovative musical and poetic elements that formed the foundation of the genre.
